Writing is less a matter of right or wrong, and more a question of what you are willing to sacrifice, and whether that sacrifice is worthwhile. When I said I never knew my biological father, that wasn’t quite true. I knew him as much as any stranger could, if they’d cared to: from his books, his Wikipedia page, and from secondhand stories told to me by my mum. As well as being a poet, Heathcote Williams was a conjurer, an actor, and an anarchist. From a distance, he seemed like someone possessed of powerful magic, a wild man and a wizard. There was a story about how he’d once used his conjuring abilities to steal Christmas from Harrods, turkey and all. Another about how he’d taken control of several streets in west London, opened the houses to the homeless and then declared independence from the United Kingdom. And another about how he’d used petrol to set fire to his own head on his supermodel girlfriend’s doorstep in the 1960s. He’d spent time in a mental asylum and possibly been subjected to ECT.

The irony is that it was one of these cutthroat writers’ dictums that scarred my early life. My biological father had a breakdown when I was very young. He vanished in the dead of night, leaving me and my mum alone in an isolated pig farmer’s cottage in the woods. He never explained what triggered the breakdown, but later he took to repeating a well-known line from Cyril Connolly’s Enemies of Promise as he ranted down the phone: “There is no more sombre enemy of good art than the pram in the hall.”
